Essential fatty acid requirement of juvenile meagre (Argyrosomus regius)

Meagre (Argyrosomus regius) is a fast-growing marine teleost and promising candidate for the diversification of Mediterranean aquaculture industry. Information on specific dietary requirements necessary to improve competitiveness meagre farming. While essential fatty acids (EFA) requirement fingerlings was previously estimated, knowledge regarding EFA on-growing juveniles still lacking. To assess juvenile meagre, six isolipidic, isoproteic, semi-purified diets with different levels n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated acid (n-3 LC-PUFA) contents 0.0%, 0.3%, 0.6%, 0.9%, 1.2%, 1.5% diet dry matter (DM) were formulated fed three times daily triplicate groups meagres 35.6 ± 0.3 g twelve weeks. Growth rates, whole body composition profile, liver lipid content as well profiles assessed. In addition, incidence hepatic steatosis granulomatosis evaluated. Juvenile 0.0% LC-PUFA showed significantly lower growth final weight compared all other treatments. There an increase in increasing gain plateaued at above 0.9% LC-PUFA. Occurrence granulomas examined supported data <0.9% greater fish containing higher The findings this study that optimal health status lays between 0.7 0.8% matter.
